Intro to Sourdough Bread Weekend
Join us in our kitchen at Hearth over 2 days to get an introduction into sourdough bread baking.
You will be learning to bake using entirely locally grown and milled grains, gaining an insight into local grain systems and what baking away from industrialised wheats is like.
Over the two days we will mix and bake:
Rye sourdough tin
Country sourdough loaf
Wholemeal sourdough
Sourdough focaccia
Surplus crackers
Starter variations, feeding and maintenance
We will hold this class every 4 months, so if you miss out on one you can catch it again in the future.
There are 8 places on each class, 6 are full price and 2 free places are reserved for Hackney residents.*
You will leave the class with all of the bread we’ve made plus more to bake at home, a dough scraper and a bread tin.
Accessibility
These classes are aimed at people who are 16+, we are unable to have children in our space for these sessions.
They will take place in our working kitchen towards the end of the day on the weekends so expect some noise and hustle around you.
We will be standing around a workbench for the session with a break halfway for a snack and a drink.
In the summer months it can get warm in our room, wearing shorts is welcome but we always recommend sensible footwear with closed toes.
We have a 15cm step to get into our space and there are no disabled toilets in our studio block sadly.
Timings and Location
These workshops will take place on both days in our bakery in Hackney Wick.
It’s a two part class on Saturday & Sunday, both days are 15:00 - 19:00
*Free Spaces for Hackney Residents
As part of our social enterprise we want to be able to offer accessible places at our events and workshops to anyone who wants to learn more about food systems.
If you can afford to pay for a full price space please do so. We will not ask for proof but these spaces are aimed at people from local low-income households.
To book a free space all you need to do is add one of the Hackney residents places and your chosen dates and then send us a proof of address . At the end of the course you will be sent a feedback sheet to fill out for our impact report.
